Governance

Session: Session is made up of the church’s elders and our minister. Elders are women and men who have been elected by the congregation and ordained. Session provides for the overall ministry of the congregation, including pastoral care, worship, Christian education, stewardship and mission.

Board of Managers: The Board of Managers (the Board) meets monthly, and has regard to the temporal and financial affairs (as distinct from the spiritual affairs) of the congregation. The Board monitors the financial health of the congregation, ensuring the bills are paid, the property maintained and all other related aspects of operating the church. Members of the Board are elected by the congregation for fixed, but renewable, terms.

Trustees: Trustees meet only when required. They: hold all property and real estate for the sole use and benefit of the congregation; are responsible for signing all legal documents related to the purchase and sale of any church property as agreed by the congregation with the approval of the presbytery; are responsible for signing all documents related to obtaining a loan or mortgage on church property as agreed by the congregation with the approval of the presbytery; and are responsible for carrying out any other duties that may be assigned to them by the congregation. Trustees are elected to a five-year term (renewable) by the congregation.

History Of St. David & St. Martin Presbyterian Church

On October 16, 1955, St. David’s held their first service in the Overbrook Public School. St. David’s Church was built at 473 Donald Street. The Reverend W. H. Brown was appointed as minister of St David’s in September 1959.

Meanwhile, on November 13, 1955, St. Martin’s held their first service in the Manor Park Public School. St. Martin’s Church was built at 444 St. Laurent Blvd. The Reverend Dr. Peter C. Wotherspoon was inducted as Minister of St Martin’s on February 1, 1957.

In 1968, after a period of discernment, the decision was made to amalgamate the two churches. The merger resulted in a revitalized church community serving God’s people in the east end of the City of Ottawa.

On September 22, 1968, the first service of worship of St. David and St. Martin Presbyterian Church was held. The cornerstones of both churches /were placed in the sanctuary at 444 St. Laurent Blvd in May 1969, where they remain today as a testament to love for the many who built and developed our founding communities.

Since the inception of the two congregations in 1955 and to the present, the people of St. David and St. Martin Presbyterian Church continue to fulfill our stated purpose within the community and the world. We remain a loving and welcoming church to the point of adding an African Christian Praise element to our Sunday worship services to honour the faith journeys of so many of our new congregants.
